Scripture:
Daniel 6:10-12
Now
when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his
upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he
got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done
before. Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God
for help. So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree:
“Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays
to any god or man except to you, O king, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in
accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”
Acts 16:22-28
The crowd joined in the attack against
Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After
they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer
was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them
in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
About
midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other
prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that
the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew
open, and everybody’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw
the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because
he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself!
We are all here!”
Psalm 95:1,2
Come,
let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our
salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music
and song.
