Scriptures:
Acts 2:1-13
When the day of Pentecost came, they were
all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind
came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw
what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of
them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now
there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under
heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment,
because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they
asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that
each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and
Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia
and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both
Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the
wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one
another, “What does this mean?”
Some,
however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Titus 2:11-14
For the grace of God that brings salvation
has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly
passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present
age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God
and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all
wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to
do what is good.
Acts
1:4,5
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the
gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few
days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
James
3:1-10
When we put bits into the mouths of
horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an
example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are
steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the
tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a
great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a
world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets
the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles
and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man
can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With the tongue we praise our Lord
and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out
of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.”
